Caelan Doris Secures Spot in Ireland Squad While McCarthy Omitted

Ireland rugby team announcement news

Returning manager Andy Farrell has selected captain Caelan Doris in his Irish team for the fall matches, but Joe McCarthy has been excluded.

The captain, who has not played since having a shoulder operation in the start of May, recently returned to Leinster training, though his fitness is uncertain whether he will be fit to face the All Blacks in Chicago on 1 November.

Lock Joe McCarthy, on the other hand, did not make the cut after not recovering from the foot injury suffered during the opening Lions Test against Australia in the summer.

Ulster player Cormac Izuchukwu and Munster wing Calvin Nash are not included due to injury, and number 15 Hugo Keenan was previously excluded after having a hip operation after the summer tour.

Dublin province prop Paddy McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the only new player in the 34-man squad, however the Irish Rugby Football Union says uncapped Munster pair Edwin Edogbo and Gleeson and previously capped Connacht wing Bolton will head to the US as "reserves".

Following playing the New Zealand at the Chicago stadium in a rematch of their 2016 encounter, the team will play Japan, the Wallabies and world title holders the Springboks in the Irish capital.

"There's an exciting look to the panel and it's a chance for the more experienced players and for those who made their debuts on the summer tour to Georgia and the Lobos," said the coach, who returns to Ireland duty after a break to coach the British and Irish Lions to the southern hemisphere.

Henshaw, Aki, Garry Ringrose and Stuart McCloskey form an veteran group of midfield options. Osborne is another option in the midfield, though the youngster is additionally a leading candidate to deputise for Keenan at number 15.

Outside backs Lowe, Hansen, Tommy O'Brien and Stockdale are included. The winger shone on his first Ireland outings during the summer with two tries apiece in the wins over the Lelos and Portugal.

Munster lock Thomas Ahern, who received his first two caps in those Tests, is kept in the squad, and experienced Northern province lock Henderson returns after sitting out the summer matches.

Jack Conan, who played in each of the Lions Tests during the tour, is poised to deputise for Doris if the skipper fails to recover full fitness soon enough to face the All Blacks.
