Tuchel Expresses Disappointment Over Home Crowd Support Following Emphatic Win Over Wales.
Thomas Tuchel voiced his sadness that the Three Lions team did not enjoy greater backing from the home fans during their decisive friendly win against Wales on Thursday evening.
Tuchel was pleased to see his team continue their winning momentum, with goals from Rogers, Watkins, and Bukayo Saka inside the initial stages deciding the game. But, he was unhappy with the atmosphere at the national stadium.
“We had limited sessions to get ready against a well-trained team and we performed excellently,” Tuchel commented. “We could have been five goals ahead at half-time. We missed the fourth and fifth ones. There was little noise. We didn’t get support back from the crowd. Our team gave their all to win.”
“How much more can you provide in the first quarter? We didn’t let them escape. If you hear just Wales fans for 30 minutes, it’s disappointing because the squad warranted greater backing today.”
“I stand by this statement. There’s nothing more than leading three goals up in a derby. I would have wished for a bit more support in periods where it is challenging.”
“In the second half, to get behind us, there was a bit too much backing for the opposition. It could have helped us to recharge, but that’s the way it went and so be it.”
Selection Choices Vindicated by Performance
Apart from potentially starting a fight with supporters, Tuchel also raised eyebrows by excluding Bellingham and Foden from his team selection. However the decision was justified by Rogers impressing again in the No 10 position and scoring his first international goal.
“He is what he is,” Tuchel explained. “He is a No 10 and he is fighting for his spot.”
Wales Manager Hopes for Lessons from Defeat
The Wales manager expressed hope that Wales, who host a strong Belgian side in a crucial World Cup qualifier on next week, take lessons from their awful performance in the opening period.
“That’s the reason I scheduled this game,” Bellamy commented. “I wanted to assess our current level. Where do we want to go? What is our identity? This performance fills me with drive.”
Injury Concern for Striker
Ollie Watkins was substituted at half-time after colliding with a goalpost and may miss out when England face Latvia in Riga in a World Cup qualifying match on Tuesday.
